The 199 Steps rise from Whitby’s Church Street to the East Cliff, where history lingers in every worn tread. Each step reveals wider views—red rooftops below, the harbour, and the vast North Sea beyond.
Steeped in legend and immortalised in Dracula, the climb leads to St. Mary’s Church and the haunting ruins of Whitby Abbey. Though often counted (just to be sure), records of the steps date back to 1340. Once used by pallbearers, their landings offered needed rest. Today, they remain both a practical path and a symbolic journey into the soul of Whitby.
